IDENTIFICATION:

Without viewing the rodent, identification must be accomplished by inspecting tracks and viewing the size and shape of the litter.

CONSEQUENCES OF RODENTS AS HEALTH PESTS:

Simple allergens like Asthma and Rhinitis are caused by dander and urine.

Hantavirus (Pulmonary Syndrome) HPS, is mainly caused by deer mice.

Plague-A disease caused by bacillus (Yersinia pestis) is spread from rats to people by the oriental flea, (Xenopsylla cheopis) AKA the “Black Death Rat” which resulted in 25 million dead in Europe during the 14th century.

There is a potential for outbreaks today, i.e., attacking the lungs leading to Pneumonic plague.  Once contracted it is extremely contagious – passing from one person to another by a simple cough.

Murine Typhus is a disease caused by Rickettsia organisms in the rats, also transmitted to humans by the rat flea.

Rickettsia pox is transferred from Rickettsia infected mice to humans by mites.

Salmonella bacteria with an estimated 2,000 strains (serotypes) exist.

Salmonellosis is acute food poisoning.

Salmonella Typhimurium and S. Enteriditis are two serotypes in particular association with rodents and food poisoning.

Rat-bite fever is caused by the bacterium (Strepto Bacilis Moniliformis), this lives in the saliva of rats  and mice.

In most cases, rats bite sleeping babies, children or the elderly that are bed confined. Weils disease or Leptospirosis is a disease caused by a spirochete bacterium that is transmitted from rats to dogs, cattle and/or pigs.  This is spread through rat urine in the food or water of people & domestic animals.

Symptoms of Leptospirosis may include high fever, rashes, severe headaches, abdominal pain and/or the sloughing of the skin.

Rabies, Trichinosis and Typhoid Dysentery are also rodent related diseases.

Rabies (Hydrophobia) is contracted from the bite of a rat.  However, generally in nature rats have not been found to be infected with rabies, but they are susceptible to the infection.  Very few cases have ever been reported of a person or animal developing rabies after a rat bite.

Trichinosis is a disease caused by a minute worm, (trichinella spiralis).  Rats & mice are the principal agents in the dissemination and perpetuation of this disease.  These worms are found in the intestines of man, pigs and rats.  The worms are also found encysted in the muscles of mammals and birds.

IT HAS BEEN ESTIMATED THE FLESH OF AN INFECTED

HUMAN CONTAINS OVER 100 MILLION ENCYSTED WORMS

Similarly, on a pro rata scale, pigs and rats also contain encysted worms.  The problem arises when the flesh is eaten by other animals and the cysts are broken down by digestive juices that allow the worm to escape.  When the worm becomes sexually active, they mate and migrate, thus producing the disease again.

Pigs eat rats & mice and food contaminated by rodents, then people eat the trichinosis pork and become infected when the meat is not properly cooked.

Lone Pine Exterminating eliminates rodents, i.e., rats & mice, thus eliminating rodent litter and urine responsible for these diseases.
